Frequently Asked Questions
World Vitiligo Day (WVD) stands as the foremost global awareness campaign dedicated to vitiligo, celebrated annually on or around June 25th since its inception in 2012.
Each year, the international campaign’s headquarters shift from one country to another, maximising its global reach. National events in the USA migrate between states annually, whereas in countries like China and India, WVD events are traditionally held in the same location, reflecting local customs and continuity.
At the heart of WVD is an annual conference that highlights specific aspects of vitiligo relevant to the region. Topics covered include basic research, treatments, lifestyle adaptations, mental health, and human rights advocacy, offering a holistic view of the condition and its effects on individuals’ lives.
The format and duration of this conference can vary significantly, from a half-day to a full three days, depending on the region and the number of attendees.
Local WVD activities encompass walks and picnics, vitiligo screening programs, radio and TV campaigns, as well as fashion, music, and sporting events.
WVD is coordinated by the non-profit Vitiligo Research Foundation (VRF) under the guidance of the WVD Presidential Committee. This campaign receives backing from an extensive network of non-profit organizations, activists, researchers, clinics, and state officials, demonstrating a collective commitment to vitiligo awareness and support.

Yes. In December 2016, the United Nations marked World Vitiligo Day in its International Calendar of Disability Events. However, it was removed in 2019 when the calendar was streamlined to ‘Major Events’. Understandably, with the subsequent COVID-19 lockdowns and ongoing global unrest, our appeal has been placed on pause by the officials.
Despite this, World Vitiligo Day has surpassed our initial ambitions, influencing public sentiment more effectively than any formal pronouncement could achieve.
Absolutely! This year our theme is “Innovation for Every Skin”
